Likely to Come to Grief:
Jubal Early's Washington Raid, the Battle of
Monocacy, the Johnson-Gilmor Raid, and the Fight at Ft. Stevens
Eric Wittenberg and I have just begun work on a new book, in which we will have a detailed historical narrative of the Battle of Monocacy. We will be detailing Early's movements, the Johnson-Gilmor Raid, and the fight at Ft. Stevens. It will feature a driving/walking tour just like our previous volumes - Plenty of Blame to Go Around: Jeb Stuart's Controversial Ride to Gettysburg and One Continuous Fight: The Retreat From Gettysburg and the Pursuit of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, July 4-14, 1863.
Both of us have long been interested in the Battle of Monocacy the Johnson-Gilmor Raid and the Fight at Ft. Stevens in the Washington defenses, the latter two of which have never had a modern scholarly treatment. There are terrific books out on Monocacy, namely by Cooling, Worthington, Judge, and Leepson, and we plan to take them to the next level, so to speak... detailed tactical narratives told around a plethora of primary sources. Since we began doing our research, we've amassed sources that, to this point (mid-February 2008) comprise a 19-page long bibliography. We expect our bibliography to reach nearly 30 single-spaced pages when we're done.
If we complete the book by late summer 2008 as planned, we hope our publisher Savas-Beatie LLC will be able to have it available by early 2009. Watch for more updated information on J.D.'s blog Hoofbeats and Cold Steel and on Eric's blog Rantings of a Civil War Historian.
