The next book project by J.D. is another Gettysburg title in conjunction with master cartographer and designer Steven Stanley. Called The Gettysburg Campaign in Numbers and Losses: Synopses, Orders of Battle, Strengths, Casualties, and Maps June 9 - July 14, 1863, this book has literally been more than twenty years in the making.
There were more than forty engagements, large and small, during the five weeks of the Gettysburg Campaign proper. Many of them have hardly received mention in any other works. In this book, J.D. has a section on each of them in which he gives a narrative of the action, and its context within the campaign. Photographs of the opposing overall commanders in each are given, along with a detailed Order of Battle that lists not only each unit involved but also the commanders of each unit and successive commanders if applicable. Detailed accountings of each unit involved are also listed - battlefield strengths, then casualties for each broken down into those killed, mortally wounded, wounded, missing, captured, and wounded/captured. Accompanying each engagement is a map or series of maps by Steve Stanley. Many of these maps appear for the very first time anywhere, since a number of the listed engagements have never been mapped until now. There are also tables included which provide a visual reference for casualties among well-known units in often-studied engagements. The reader will be able, for example, to follow a regiment or other unit from the beginning to the end of the campaign as casualties take their toll on it throughout the five pivotal weeks. At the end of each engagement, there is also a suggested reading list where applicable.
Published by Savas Beatie LLC, the book is entirely in full color, with maps and complete design by Steven Stanley. 192 pages total, hardback, with a cover price of only $29.95.
The book is projected to appear in the spring of 2012. At the left you can pre-order and reserve your copy signed and personalized by J.D. and Steve. The book will be shipped to you as soon as it's available.
Other book projects are currently in the works. J.D. and Steve are currently working on a guide to the Maryland Campaign of 1862, including Harpers Ferry, South Mountain, Antietam, and Shepardstown. It will be similar in format to their The Complete Gettysburg Guide. They will also be working on more guides to other battles, campaigns, and Civil War related topics.
In addition, J.D. has future plans for detailed narrative treatments similar to his first two books. Watch for further news!
